Historical sources inform us that between years 1806 and 1977 there have been at least 5 times at which building a sugar factory was considered, but due to political and economical reasons in the country, they have always been dismissed or the factory was being built elsewhere.
1976
Finally; in the foundation of social plan of SR Slovenia, for the period from 1979 till 1980, was decided that in Slovenia we are going to increase the rural output and that one of the produce will also be sugar beet.
1977
Within the association SLOVIN we started building a company. The funding came from a special fund, which was called the “sugar buck”. These were the means put together by 129 companies with the help of home and foreign crediting. Constructing was taken over by a German company; BMA from Braunschweig, but it was being helped by many other enterprises, mostly from Slovenia, but also some from other republics of ex-Yugoslavia.
1979
Making of the factory was successfully finished.
1980
First campaign of sugar. The years of operations begin. In the first years the main aim was to make enough sugar beet for full usage of remodelling capacity.
The efficiency of the factory was:
- daily remaking of sugar beet: 4.000t/day
- yearly remaking of sugar beet: 320.000t
- yearly production of sugar: 42.000t
- yearly production of molasses: 12.800t
- yearly production of cossettes: 12.800t
Although the acres with sugar beet were growing and we were paying off our debts, the want of sugar beet and invariable lacking means for the plant still represented a serious problem.
1989
The final payment of all credits, foreign and national.
1993
The loss of acres for production of sugar beet in Croatia (almost the half of all acres the factory had).
Decision was made to invest in new technology, which will enable the processing of sugarcane into sugar. So in the year 1994 first quantity of cane-sugar was made that partly covered the loss at the waste of acreage in Croatia.
1994
The beginning of process of reforming the company into a Plc (public limited company).
1996
The placing of TSO d.d. ( Plc ) stocks on the exchange market.
1997
Big changes in the ownership structure; Dutch corporation COSUN from Breda bought the majority of stock.
The urgency for modernisation also brought to capital increase in a sum of 17.3 million DEM (now: 8.6 million €).
2006
With the 2006/2007 marketing year the successful manufacture of sugar in Slovenia ended due to considerably worsened conditions imposed by European policy. These negative conditions are a consequence of the influences of globalization and the EU decision.
After numerous talks with sugar beet growers, state representatives, employees and shareholders, a decision was adopted at the June assembly that in the 2007/2008 marketing year the production of sugar would be halted, the whole quota renounced and that all those involved should participate in the utilization of aid provided for restructuring in line with EU regulations.
This decision placed before the Company leadership the task of drawing up a restructuring programme and handing it over to the state by 31 January 2007 to be verified. The context and course of restructuring are defined by the Council Regulation (EC) No. 320/2006 of 20 February 2006 and the Council Regulation (EC) No. 968/2006 of 27 June 2006.
