Dear Shareholders,
In 2002, the purpose of TSO's activities was primarily to achieve the objectives set out in the business plan and to ensure favourable conditions for the improvement of our company's competitive strenght.
Sugar was produced partly from sugar beet and partly from raw cane sugar. The interest in sugar beet cultivation did not increase even though we had expected it due to the conditions.

The comunication of our company with sugar beet growers was ongoing, carried out either directly – trough the Association of Sugar Beet Growers of Slovenia and the Sugar Beet Centre – or directly, which resulted in sugar beet growers beeing well informed regarding the conditions in sugar industry in Slovenia and abroad; thus the decision on growing sugar beet could be based on adequate information.
After a thorough analysis of the conditions, it was established that there were several reasons for the decrease in sugar beet acreage. Thus, in the years of prolonged drought (2000 and 2001), there was a question whether sugar beet growing was economical at all; other reasons are connected with the land and social structure of Slovene agriculture, and with short-sighted planning of a large number of Slovene growers.

Dear Shareholders,
All of our activities during 2001 were targeted at achieving goals that had been set out in TSO's business plan, which is itself an integral part of corporate strategy. Unfortunately, a great number of elements influencing the company's operations were changing and have thus effected results.
The greatest concentration of negative circumstances impacted the actual cultivation of sugar beet, further to which the total contracted acreage of this raw material crop decreased drastically in 2001.

Several factors underlie this decline. The price paid to growers for their sugar beet in 2000 fell due to the tremendous slump in the price of refined sugar on the world market. Such global movements, of course, also impact domestic prices, sugar beet included. The prolonged drought in 2000, which resulted in lower sugar content in beet, was yet another very important factor further impacting the income of beet growers, particularly so in those areas with light soils.
